The story behind Millbrig...
Millbrig...homegrown in Aberdeenshire, firstly in the studio in the fisherman's cottage at Downies, and more latterly in the Cairngorms.
A creative mix of original lyrics, song, and multi-track music, exploring our experiences, how we view humanity, and often reflecting on Nature, and it's gradual decline...

Long ago, when music venues, grand hotels, and pubs welcomed both rock music and leather-clad customers, Steve Allan played electric guitar in rock bands in the North-East of Scotland. After a while he retreated to Downies, a temporary slave to capitalism, but remained uncannily committed to his deep relationship with music - writing and recording from his fisherman's cottage. Expanding his tech skills - he now blends these with the haunting sounds from a wide range of acoustic instruments, and folk-ish low-D whistle, producing folk/rock tracks as Yorlum, and more recently as The Honey Barrel Blues Band.

In 2016, Steve met Penny who was performing at Musa Cafe's open mic night, in Aberdeen. Somehow, on the tiny stage, amongst walls plastered with bizarre art (before it was taken over by a dull corporate entity, they got together before the authoritas closed down the live music scene. They got together and wrote new material, performing in public as Millbrig, at various folk clubs and at festivals in Scotland - occasionally venturing south of the border when booked for gigs. After making two albums, Millbrig and Planets Collide, Penny disappeared for a while, but Steve just carried on writing music and recording, uploading blues tracks, until Penny (now an educated woman of a certain age) re-appeared.

In 2023 they moved in together at their new base in the Cairngorms, where they hide away. They are lucky enough to have a decent interlinked recording rooms, and a separate playing area/art space, which allows them both to explore their creativity to the max. Penny continues to be the main wordsmith and song-writer, and Steve the multi-instrumentalist and tech wizard regarding all things computerized. They are back in the game, and since 2025 have begun to release new Millbrig tracks onto Spotify, You Tube and Apple etc., one at a time, breaking out now and again to look for paintbrushes, bake stuff, or attend to the vegetable patch.

Steve and Penny in one of their last performances at Musa Cafe, Aberdeen...note the deer head and corporate dining wine bottles - perhaps a pseudo-Scottish attempt to gentrify the community space...(the weekly open mic was terminated shortly after this photo was taken)
