The story behind Millbrig...
Millbrig...homegrown in Aberdeenshire, firstly in their studio in Steve's fisherman's cottage at Downies, and latterly, in the Cairngorms.
A creative mix of original lyrics, song, and multi-layered music tracks, exploring life-experiences and humanity in general - often reflecting on Nature, and it's decline...and the futility of war.

Long ago, when music venues, grand hotels, and pubs welcomed both rock music and leather-clad customers, biker Steve Allan played electric guitar in rock bands in the North-East of Scotland. After a while he retreated to Downies, a temporary slave to capitalism, but remained uncannily committed to his music - writing and recording from his fisherman's cottage. Expanding his tech capability, he blended these with the haunting sounds of a wide range of acoustic instruments (everything from rock guitar to folk-ish low-D whistle) producing folk/rock tracks online as Yorlum, and more recently, as The Honey Barrel Blues Band.

In 2016, Steve met Penny when they performed separately on stage at Musa Cafe's open mic night, in Aberdeen. Somehow, in the crowds crammed amoungst walls plastered with bizarre artwork (before it was taken over by corporate giants Brewdog, who have now departed, they paired up before the authoritas closed down the live music scene in Aberdeen. They wrote new material, performing as Millbrig, at various clubs and festivals in Scotland (Belladrum etc.) - venturing south when booked for gigs or radio live plays. After making two albums, Millbrig and Planets Collide, Penny disappeared for a while, but Steve carried on writing and recording until Penny (now an educated woman of a certain age) re-appeared in 2025.

They live together at their new base in the Cairngorms, where they are writing and producing prolifically. They are fortunate to have interlinked recording rooms, and a separate space for jamming/getting messy with paints, which allows them both to explore their creativity to the max. Penny is the main wordsmith and song-writer, and Steve the multi-instrumentalist and tech wizard. They are fully back in the game, and regularly release new Millbrig tracks onto Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube etc. one at a time, breaking out now and again to look for paintbrushes, cook (Penny, not Steve), or attend to the vegetable patch.

PICTURE: Millbrig in one of their last performances at Musa Cafe, Aberdeen...note the deer head and corporate dining wine bottle rack - perhaps an attempt to gentrify the community arts space...although the open mic arena was terminated shortly after this photo was taken.
